Francis M. Dullea, an owner and trainer on the old New England circuit for 50 years, passed away April 3 at age 77.
Dullea, a multiple stakes-winning trainer, started 6,984 horses who won 697 races, placed 732 times, and earned $4,777,874 in purses, according to Equibase statistics. The final horse he sent to post in his career was on June 19, 2019 at Suffolk Downs.
Dullea is survived by his wife Shirley, who is a multiple stakes-winning owner and a longtime member of the board of directors of the New England affiliate of the Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association; children Denise Brisette, Joseph Jenkins, Lisa Ricci, and Tracy Pate, and stepson Robert Corriveau; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
