Wednesday it was announced that St. Thomas, which just finished its third season in Division I, would move from its current home in the CCHA to the powerhouse NCHC beginning in 2026-27.
For its head coach, Rico Blasi, it will be a bit of a homecoming. A Miami alum, he was head coach at his alma mater in the old CCHA and through the formation of the NCHC in 2012. He also has roots in Denver, where he had his first coaching job.
The NCHC will get to be at an even 10 teams (Arizona State is joining this year to make nine), and gets its footprint into the Minneapolis/St. Paul market. The CCHA will be left at eight teams again, with Augustana set to become a full-fledged member next year.
The NCHC clearly felt good about the direction…
