Braxton Whitehead, who will be playing his fifth season in the Western Hockey League in 2024-25, has verbally committed to play at Arizona State starting in fall of 2025.
If he can secure NCAA eligibility, Whitehead would be the first player from one of Canada’s Major Junior leagues to play for an NCAA school since that door was closed in the early 1980s, other than a few players who played a handful of Major Junior games and won appeals.
Major Junior players are generally 16 to 20 years old. Whitehead, who turned 20 in June, has already played 195 games for Regina of WHL.
