Penn State’s Schoen Contributing Again After 18-Month Absence For Gruesome Injury

On Jan. 27, 2023, Penn State was down 2-0 against Michigan at Yost Ice Arena. The Nittany Lions took the ice in the second period to try and turn the tide in their favor.
Less than two minutes into the second period, Penn State forward Ben Schoen had just blocked a shot at the defensive blue line that led to a partial breakaway, and he rushed in on goal. After shooting, he was immediately hit by Michigan defenseman Jay Keranen. Schoen crashed hard, feet first, into the boards.
“To be honest, I thought I just broke my ankle. Didn’t know it was going to be what it turned out to be,” Schoen said.
