Massachusetts-Lowell’s Ben Meehan had a decision to make: sign a professional deal with the LA Kings, the team that selected him in the fifth round of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, or return to college for his graduate year.
When an NCAA player is drafted, the respective NHL team owns the players rights for four years. Should a player fail to sign with the team that drafted him prior to Aug. 15 of that fourth year, he becomes a free agent.
With the clock ticking, Meehan ultimately made the decision to return to college for his graduate year, returning to Lowell in the process.
