After an exciting Thanksgiving holiday weekend of horse racing that saw the conclusion of fall meets at Churchill Downs and Del Mar, the calendar turns to December, and on cue, two popular race meets are scheduled to kick off for lengthy runs into early spring.
Oaklawn Park, one of the most successful tracks in North America, opens its 2024-’25 meet Friday, Dec. 6. The Hot Springs, Ark., track is known for its premier dirt racing featuring four prep races for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve. Read a preview of the meet here.
In Kentucky, Turfway Park in Florence takes over the racing calendar. Its holiday meet opens Wednesday, Dec. 4 to be followed by a winter/spring meet in 2025, with night racing on tap through late March save for daytime cards on New Year’s Day and on March 22, when the track’s Kentucky Derby prep, the Jeff Ruby Steaks, will be held.
