A big part of Michigan’s success this season can be attributed to an improved penalty kill. Even after its recent cold spell on the offensive side, which led to three straight shutout losses, the Wolverines’ penalty kill has kept them in games. And Michigan (11-6-1, 5-3-0 Big Ten) is still in good shape, sitting ninth in the Pairwise, and has the Big Ten’s second-most effective shorthanded unit at 83.1 percent, a step up from a combined 77.3 percent over the previous two seasons.
Credit goes to assistant coach Rob Rassey, who returned to PK duties after handing off the blueprint to assistant coach Matthew Deschamps last season. Rassey was also in charge of Harvard’s penalty kill for six seasons before arriving in Ann Arbor in the 2022-23…
