TEMPE, Ariz. Cornell came into the season with high expectations, and expectations that were earned.
In the past three years, Denver is 8-1 in the NCAA Tournament. The only loss? Cornell. Last season, Cornell gave Denver arguably its toughest game, in the Regional Final, with the Pioneers eventually winning another championship.
Cornell had all but one regular back from that team. And the expectations only ratcheted up further after it opened the season with a sweep of North Dakota.
Throw in the fact that this is coach Mike Schafer’s 30th and final season behing the Big Red bench, and it looked like a Frozen Four path was theirs for the taking.
