The five independent teams, plus potentially Tennessee State, are in discussions to create a postseason tournament starting next year.
This could happen with or without the creation of an actual conference, according to multiple coaches involved in the talks.
A lot of work needs to be done, but with none of the established six conferences opening its doors any time soon, the independents believe they have to do something.
At the moment, the group is also awaiting next week’s NCAA Convention, where it will be decided whether the moratorium on the creation of new single-sport conferences gets lifted. That may further inform the path this group takes.
