Despite the euphoria from UNLV’s recent shootout win over Denver in an exhibition game — and the national media attention it created — the successful program is not any closer to making the jump to NCAA Division I.
While UNLV coach Anthony Vignieri-Greener continues to work at it, as he has for many years, there are still too many obstacles in the way. As with anything, that mostly comes down to money.
UNLV hockey has set up an advisory board, made up of local businessmen and such, to help guide it through a possible transition.
But the school’s athletic department has yet to even sign off on a feasibility study, even though the NHL would foot the bill.
