Minnesota Juggling Its Goaltending Duo All the Way To No. 1 Seed Status

Gophers coach Bob Motzko has one philosophy when it comes to picking his goaltenders for a series.
“As a head coach, we never pick number one goalies. We only pick starters. Number one goalies are made. They earn it. They go out and earn that. And we pick starters,” Motzko said. “You start Friday, you start Saturday, and eventually at some point in a career, somebody emerges as the number one guy.”
That mindset has been put in full effect this season more than ever. Goaltenders Nathan Airey, a sophomore, and fifth-year transfer Liam Souliere have both been named “starters” throughout the campaign.
