Western Michigan had gone 42 straight penalty kills without allowing a goal heading into the third period of Friday’s game, then allowed two power-play goals that allowed Omaha to tie it up. The Broncos won the game in overtime, but it left a bit of a bad taste.
So the Broncos came out and dominated Saturday, topping the Mavericks 6-1, all while going 5-for-5 on the penalty kill. They also outshot Omaha 43-17, moving five ahead of Arizona State for first place in the NCHC with two games in hand.
Western Michigan has never won a regular-season conference championship in the 52 years of its program’s history.
