Connecticut coach Mike Cavanaugh has to be considered the frontrunner for Hockey East and, potentially, national coach of the year.
The Huskies were picked near the bottom of their league this season. There was promise, but they were facing the loss of key players in the portal — Matthew Wood, Samu Salminen and Argenii Sergeev — and freshmen were likely going to fill those slots.
Instead, the Huskies have persevered and become one of the season’s biggest surprises. According to our latest Pairwise Probability Matrix, the Huskies will lock up an NCAA Tournament berth for the first time in program history.
