The name Hobey Baker is forever etched in the minds of college hockey fans, mainly because the sport’s biggest individual honor is named after him, and every year, we get a glorified reminder of his resume.
But 110 years ago, he was known to more than college hockey fans. He was an athlete about as famous as anyone in the United States, a celebrity at a time when movie stars didn’t even yet exist. And because he tragically died young on a World War I battlefield in France, his story makes for interesting reading when it gets resurrected every so often.
