Cornell’s Mike Schafer Will Retire Next Year, And Leave an Indelible Legacy

Pat Ferschweiler was a player at Western Michigan when Mike Schafer was an assistant coach there in the early 1990s. One day, the two were chatting when future plans came up. Ferschweiler was thinking about going into coaching one day. Schafer said to Ferschweiler, “I’m going to be head coach at Cornell, and make the program great again.”
And a couple years later, Schafer did just that. And he continued to do it for the next 29 years.
An emotional Schafer announced his retirement Thursday, effective at the end of the 2024-25 season. And then, as it turns out, I got emotional too.
